Turning away from the spectacular Falls of Mealt and Tartan Rock I wandered along the cliff at Trotternish in the north of the Isle of Skye. In less than an hour I watched a thunderstorm roll across the Sound followed by ‘get the sunglasses out' sunshine which was rapidly followed by tumultuous clouds that were so solid they looked like ships of the sky. Then there was this. I sketched very rapidly during these transitions filling numerous pages as I tried to capture the majestic and truly awesome sky and its impact on the sea and lands below. I have since painted six different paintings in the warmth of the studio from these sketches and the vivid memories of a magical day which still haunt me in a wonderful way.
